What we are looking for:

Volunteers

 

Mentors

     We are currently looking for mentors. Mentors are expected to provide strategies for, and assist our youth with, multicultural competence, learning, and ethical decision-making.


     The Mentor is responsible for assisting our youth individually and in groups. The Mentor's primary role is to offer Peer assistance to our youth and to facilitate the creation of a positive environment which supports our youth academic and personal success. In order for these environments to develop, Mentors must make significant connections with the youth, help our youth know each other, and connect our youth and families to the resources and opportunities of achieving and living a better and productive life and education. Strategies for success include maintaining individual and group contact, a thorough knowledge of behavioral assistance, planning and implementing activities, and responding to community and individual concerns.


Characteristic Duties


Learning Focus

  • Establish and maintain an environment that is supportive of successful academic achievement.

  • Respond to youth behavior which may be indicative of academic problems.

  • Implement activities and strategies that contribute to youth's academic success.

  • Exhibit successful academic role modeling behavior.

  • Assist youth in connecting with other youth and their peers.


Multicultural Competence Focus

  • Implement activities and strategies that contribute to increasing multicultural competence.

  • Help utilize multicultural resources in the area.

  • Respond to youth behavior which is discriminatory and/or harassing.

 

Youth Contact

  • Know names and pertinent information about our youth.
    Maintain on going contact with youth and families individually and as a community.

  • Conduct family Interviews.

  • Maintain a high profile; be approachable and receptive.

  • Encourage interaction among the youth and their peers and mentor.

  • Work with other staff to implement programs that meet our youth needs.

  • Communicate regularly with our youth through bulletin boards postings, activities, through families and informal contact.


Community Involvement

  • Assist youth in establishing community standards and in accepting responsibility for individual issues.

  • Facilitate regular community meetings.

  • Encourage the development of an environment that is inclusive of the diverse backgrounds of our youth and families.

  • Confront and document inappropriate behavior.

  • Mediate conflicts.

  • Work consistently to create a civil and respectful atmosphere.

  • Assist in the recruitment and development of youth leaders.

  • Promote involvement in community social events, particularly on the weekends.
     

Activity Planning

  • Assess youth needs.

  • Facilitate events that connect youth with each other and that promote learning and involvement opportunities.

  • Engage youth in activity planning.
